EVENT BACKGROUND

Today, both Ong Teng Cheong Peak and Ong Siew May Peak have been recognised in commemoration of his patronage of the nation’s first successful Mount Everest expedition in 1995.

In August 2017, student mountaineering teams from NUS and SUTD successfully scaled both peaks, with sponsorship from the ONG Foundation.

With the continued support of the ONG Foundation, NUS and SUTD student teams will scale these peaks annually through 2020, instilling leadership and commemorating the legacy of Singapore’s first elected President. It bestows the former President and his wife with a unique and fitting end to a Singaporean tale that is equal parts love, history and national pride.
